Question by JimPettis: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – why was everyone on the 2nd floor? (SPOILERS!)?
OK, I’m re-reading the entire series in preparation for my fan fiction, so details are important.
The circumstances (the last 3 pages of the chapter “The Deathday Party”):
HP, Hermy and Ron are leaving the ghost deathday party during the “Halloween feast”. HP hears the basilisk threatening to kill someone and runs up to the 2nd floor. In the last corridor searched, they find Mrs. Norris and the message.
At that moment, seemingly the entire student body approaches “from either end of the corridor”. Our heroes were unable to leave the scene without being noticed.
*Why* were all the students (or a huge number of them, definitely Slytherin was present) heading for that particular corridor at that time of day? It was after 7 o’clock. There was no other exit from it – or HP & friends would have used it.
Please provide well-reasoned answers or suggestions. Who (besides Malfoy) was present could be important to my story, and why is important.
Thanks,
Jim
My released fan fiction so far (please provide cutting criticism!)

I know they were leaving the feast. The book is plain on that score. Why, upon leaving the feast, were they all traveling toward that particular corridor – the one without another exit?

all the students were leaving the halloween feast, that can be the only reason why
What do you think? Answer below!

Well, it was Halloween, so maybe they were leaving the feast? But that still doesn’t make sense to me BECAUSE of the fact that the different common rooms are in different parts of the school, they wouldn’t all be going the same way. The dining room is on the ground floor, so they wouldn’t be leaving through the second floor corridor.
That’s really confusing now, actually. AH! lol, I’m glad you asked this, but I’m not going to be able to figure it out and it’s going to bug me!
(if you find out, e-mail me please!)
Well…we were all leaving the Halloween feast because (like all school functions) it was BO-ring…and we had heard that there was going to be an orgy on second floor…and…well, you get the picture…we didn’t know others had beaten us to it…and, they weren’t supposed to be invited…or…at least that’s what we heard…
I know it´s easy to think that authors are perfect and every little thing has a hidden meaning behind it. But sometimes what appears to be a flaw of logic is just that. A flaw of logic. If you read the HP books carefully (which you´re obviously doing) you´ll notice a lot of them.
I’m sorry to say that Candice is probably right on this one. It was a mistake, simple as that. It probably would have made sense if they were on the first floor since the feast is there.
How about this. The houses (aside from Slytherin) were simply going to their corridors which are (assumably) on at least the second corridor. And as for the Slytherins, because of the Death Day party they were forced to find another way to the dungeons which the only way was to cross the second floor to the end. Perhaps that corridor was the main passageway.
I know this isn’t true, but maybe it can help you come up with your own answers for your fanfic. Good luck with it and hope this helped.
